17th Annual Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational Tournament For the 17th consecutive year, lacrosse players in the know gathered in Hawaii for the can’t-miss annual event. US Lacrosse Hawaii Chapter was proud to host another successful Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational Tournament October 26-28, 2007 continuing the tradition of making each year better than the last. All the elements players have come to expect from the Hawaii Tournament were on offer again this year: perfect weather, a fun Friday night welcome party, special deals around Waikiki, world-class lacrosse and of course, the legendary Halloween party Sunday night. The Men’s Elite final was as dynamic and high-level as players and spectators have come to expect. In a rematch of last year, the defending champions Crease Monkeys took on Mikey Powell and Wimmer Solutions. Led by Tournament MVP Matt Streibel, the Crease Monkeys kept hold of the crown with a 9-8 victory. Streibel put home four goals, five separate players accounted for the rest, and Aaron Fenton, last year’s MVP, led the defense from goal.
In another repeat from last year, the Silver Crease Monkeys claimed the trophy in the Men’s Masters Division, defeating Canada West 12-3. In their earlier match up on Saturday, these two teams called a draw and ended the game in a 5-5 tie. Not only demonstrating good sportsmanship, this created bigger anticipation for the rematch in the championship. Though not as close, the Masters final was still an exciting game and great finish to their weekend. The Women also saw a rematch in the championship, with the defending champions Crease Monkeys facing East West Sports Camp (formerly Brand Elite). The hopes of championship title were dashed, however, as East West won decisively, 12-5. With seven players contributing to East West’s scoring, it was a total team effort. In the end, Jen Breakey, a former member of the Wahine Lacrosse Club, was awarded the MVP honors. Perhaps the most notable improvement of Tournament came with the addition of a Grand Masters Division. The four teams – Canada, Essian, Mr. Boh and Elemakule (Hawaiian for “old man”) – played as hard as the pros, with Team Essian emerging to take the inaugural crown. In all, this Tournament saw 13 Men’s Elite teams, 4 Men’s Masters, 4 Men’s Grand Masters and 13 Women’s Elite for the largest-ever turnout of 34 teams. It just keeps getting bigger and better out on the island! The road to the finals wasn’t a walk in the park for the champions, with great competition in the semi-finals. Barbary Coast and Team Marin made the Crease Monkeys and Wimmer earn their championship berths, respectively. On the Women’s side, Breakaway and Pepperdine played well through the semis. And it couldn’t have been easy for anyone to play against Olympic Club, whose goalie decided to start the Halloween celebration early and played throughout Sunday in nothing but a Speedo!
Although it’s become more difficult for the home teams to win the Tournament now that it’s grown to include the best talent in the world, the six Hawaii teams – two Men’s Elite, one Masters, one Grand Masters and two Women’s – represented well. Notably, the Hawaii Masters took their final game of the weekend in triple overtime over Team Zipang with a goal by Ron Foo. And sisters Rachel and Dana Miller tallied a number of goals for the Wahine Eleu and Holona teams, respectively. Ever increasing and important to the Hawaii Tournament is the Japanese presence. Always the first on the field to warm up, and always up for as many games as possible, their enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s a crucial element of the Tournament. With four Women’s and five Men’s teams from Japan, the continuing growth of the sport is evident and their skill level improves every year. Even up against the best talent in the world, there’s no team having more fun than the Japanese players on the field. To add an extra competitive element for the younger players out there, 2007 presented the first College Cup. Teams with the majority of its members in college or within three years of graduating were eligible to win this award. Kyoto University Lacrosse took home the inaugural “Yas Hayakawa College Cup” award in a battle with Tokyo that was decided 6-1. We look forward to expanding the College Cup to include the Women’s Division in the future. The Tournament reached out to kids not yet in college, as well - Hawaii’s next generation of lacrosse stars got their annual treat of not only watching the best players in the world right in their own backyard, but actually learning from them. Talon Lacrosse, the Crease Monkeys and Crease Monkettes hosted a youth clinic Friday afternoon, spending two hours teaching the basics and having fun with the young players. No one went home empty handed, with prizes like STX hats, equipment bags and loads of Quiksilver and Roxy T-shirts. The kids got to show off some of their new skills on Sunday, in a few exhibition games on the main field just before the Men’s Elite final. Immediately following the championship games on Sunday, Field Operations Director Dan Cho took the mic to begin the awards ceremony, first thanking our many generous sponsors: AYLA, Coors Light, Glaceau Vitamin Water, HonBlue, Lulu’s, Quiksilver, Tesoro, The Tewaaraton Award Foundation and Warrior Lacrosse. After the winning and runner up teams received their leis and trophies, it was time to recognize a few people without whom the Hawaii Lacrosse Club and Tournament wouldn’t be possible:
DON GLADSTONE AWARD BILL NAGY AWARD
While the action on the field is the heart of the tournament, everyone knows the nightlife is almost as integral to the Hawaii experience. Friday kicked off with plenty of energy at the new Senor Frog’s, land of the endless spring break. Saturday night, sandwiched between two long days in the sun, was a bit more mellow at Red Lion Waikiki, a sports bar almost completely overtaken with tournament participants enjoying darts, pool, dancing and the Coors Light specials. As always, the weekend culminated with the never-disappointing Halloween party on Sunday night at Lulu’s Waikiki. The drinks were flowing, the dance floor was open and the costumes as impressive as ever. When Hot Buttered Rum took a set break, lax fans were surprised with a special treat: Mikey Powell, center stage with his guitar, in full on snorkel gear – wetsuit, mask and fins. Hawaii Master Steve “Sparkee” Chamberlain, in serious sultan regalia, arrived with his harem of belly dancers. Hulk Hogan was in the house, as was Elvis, a classic Jack-O-Lantern, a smattering of Canadian Smurfs and a herd of wild bison. Costumes have become as important to pack as a stick and jersey, so be sure to bring an even better one next year, and schedule a late Monday flight home! It was another amazing weekend, and everyone is already making plans for their return.
(Canada, Essian, Mr. Boh and Elemakule (Hawaiian for “old man”)はプロと同じくらい一生懸命に試合をし、Essianチームが最初のトロフィーを獲得しました。 13チームのMen’s Elite teams, 4チームの Men’s Masters, 4チームの Men’s Grand Masters、そして13チームの Women’s Eliteです。
DON GLADSTONE AWARD

| Get Your Team
Picture Taken! We'll have on-field photographers from 808 Sport Shots capturing all the action. You should contact them to coordinate a sweet team photo like this one of our 2006 Women's Elite Champions. Here's the special deal they've arranged for the Hawaii Lacrosse Tournament: The outfit is run by an NFL Photographer who will be based close to the announcer's booth when he's not snapping shots on the field. He uses super-fast, 10-shot/second cameras to take sweet pics of your games and then sells CDs of the pictures (containing 200 - 600 pictures of your team in action, although he can't guarantee everyone will be included in the CD). He charges $25/player on the team for the CDs. Different teams get different CDs. However, since CDs can be duplicated, the whole team must order a CD or he won't burn the CDs. Once he collects $525 from your team he will burn as many additional CDs as you request. If you pre-order the CD for your team, he will pay special attention to the games your team plays in, and capture images from 2 of your games. If you can't organize your whole team to purchase a CD, don't worry...you can flip through the gallery on his website and purchase them ala carte. Action shots: (1) 5X7 is $6.00; (2) 5X7's are $10.00; (1) 8X10 is $11.00. All of these are internet orders. 8X10 team portraits with graphics, $16.00. All the images are copywritten so if you want to use them for other than personal use you must request permission from him in writing (even if you own the CD). Questions? Shoot him an email. Chat with one of our many Volunteers! The 17th Annual Tournament will be staffed by volunteers wearing yellow t-shirts. They'll be there to answer your questions or try to track down someone who can. Ask them to rate your best lacrosse trick! :) Did you know... The Waikiki Aquarium is just across the street from Kapiolani Park on the shoreline to the south? Check out the Hawaiian monk seals stationed there - one of the most critically endangered species in the world. Post-Game Activities Of course, there are a plethora of places to go in Waikiki, including one of the three (3) Tournament Sponsored Parties, but if you want to do something else first and stop in later, here are some options for you: Surf! Need we say more? The Hawaii Lacrosse Ohana (family) is lucky to have a member who owns and operates a Surf School. Learn to surf with Girls Who Surf and get a discount group rate of $50/person for one hour lesson, equipment rental, and the chance to try it on 5 -10 waves each. Reserve now to ensure your team a spot. Call Girls Who Surf at 808-371-8917. Watch a University of Hawaii Football Game Haven't caught "Colt Fever" yet? Once you watch this Heisman candidate try to throw for another 400 yard game you'll know why locals are crazy about "UH Football." The Rainbow Warriors try to take down visiting New Mexico State at Aloha Stadium on Saturday, Oct 27 (6:05pm). Tickets are on sale at the stadium or you can click here. Go to a Luau! Paradise Cove is one of several options. Check out Waikiki's Nightlife! Plenty of options to while away the midnight hours if that's your thing. Here are two if clubbing is your style: Zanzabar, where it's 18 to get in on Sunday night (21 on Saturday) and Fashion45, with 2 dancefloors and 2 DJs. Eat at Lulu's Waikiki! All Tournament Participants and their friends and family will get 10% off their food at Lulu's Waikiki all day Friday, Saturday and until 5:00pm Sunday just for saying they are a part of Hawaii Lacrosse. Eat at Senor Frog's Waikiki! All Tournament Participants and their friends and family will get 15% off their food at Senor Frog's all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday just for saying they are a part of Hawaii Lacrosse. Eat at Red Lion Waikiki! All Tournament Participants and their friends and family will get 25% off their food at Red Lion all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday just for saying they are a part of Hawaii Lacrosse. Located across the street from the Duke Statue in Waikiki, downstairs of the Hyatt Hotel. (808) 926-5466 In Memoriam of William Nagy 1954-2005 |
