2003 Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational
Award Winners:

The Don Gladstone Award was established in 1992 in memory of Don Gladstone. Between 1992 & 1999, the award was given to the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Since the year 2000, the award has been presented to individuals who have selflessly dedicated a great amount of their lives to the promotion and enjoyment of lacrosse. In the inaugural 1991 Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational, Don played defense with the Haole Lacrosse Club from British Columbia, Canada. He was a stellar field and box lacrosse performer and an outstanding individual. He played on the Richmond Outlaws Junior A box lacrosse team at age 24, and twice went to the Canadian championships. Don died suddenly in the summer of 1992. The Hawai'i Lacrosse Club is extremely proud to carry on Don's spirit through the annual presentation of the Don Gladstone Award.

The Hawai'i Lacrosse Club presented the 2003 Don Gladstone Award to Mark J. Tarone for his outstanding contributions to the game of lacrosse.

The Field Picture: It's safe to say that this guy has some serious lacrosse in his blood. Despite not growing up in one of the classic lacrosse hotspots, Tarone began his lacrosse career at the age of 10 in Palm Beach, Florida. By the conclusion of his senior year at St. Andrew's School (FL), he was a veteran middie with 4 State Lacrosse Championships under his belt. As an All-Ivy defenseman at the University of Pennsylvania ('89-'92), Tarone had the opportunity to play against some of the best, and to be coached by some of the best - Tony Seaman, Dave Pietramala and Jim Stagnita. And since 1993, he's anchored the Hawaii Lacrosse Club defense, winning tournaments in California and Hawaii.

The Local Picture: But Mark's contributions to the game of lacrosse don't just revolve around take-away checks and fast breaks. He served as the president of the Hawaii Lacrosse Club from 1999 to 2001, and helped co-found the Hawaii women's team. Over the past five years, he has worked tirelessly as a director, coordinator and fundraiser for the Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational. Under his efforts, the hot Hawaii tournament has grown from a 7-team men's only event to a 31-team competition featuring highly-competitive Men's Elite, Women's Elite and Men's Master's Divisions. Mark has also worked hard to get youth lacrosse started in Hawaii, providing funding and equipment through Hawaii Lacrosse Club donations as well as his own direct cash support - Tarone donated $3,000 to Hawaii youth lacrosse in 2002, raised through his own business efforts.

The Bigger Picture: Tarone has also continued to foster the international exchange of our favorite sport. Since his involvement in the coordination of the Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational in 1999, international participation in the event has grown to include Hong Kong, Korean and Australian participants (in addition to Japanese and Canadian stalwarts). He also helped introduce lacrosse to Tonga by organizing a Hawaii exhibition game for the King of Tonga in July of 2000. The Hawaii Lacrosse Club is thrilled to present the 2003 Don Gladstone Award to Mark Tarone in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the game of lacrosse !
