2002 Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational

Women's Division:

The women's competition featured eleven talented and very evenly matched teams. When play began, the pre-tourney favorites NYAC and Keio University from Japan proved that their pre-tournament recognition was well deserved by winning all of their games on Saturday. However, there was one major surprise. The Wahine Lacrosse team (the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club's women's team) won all of their round robin games, thereby earning themselves a berth into the semi-finals. The Wahine team had plenty of talent, but what was so surprising was how well they gelled as a team. Most of the members of the team had never played in a game together before the tournament. This was also true for the Canadian and Pacific teams.

In the semi-final games, NYAC barely advanced to the finals in a close game with San Francisco, whereas the semi-final game between the Wahines and Keio University was not so close. Keio University displayed tremendous skill, strength, and discipline, resulting in a strong win in the semi-finals.

The championship game featured two extremely competitive teams -- NYAC and Keio University. NYAC's talent is known universally. As one Keio University player commented after the game, "we were privileged to play this team." Although Keio University was not favored at the start of the tournament, other teams quickly gained respect for the strong, skilled team. The final match was not a game to be missed: the fast, accurate passes of Keio Unviersity compared to the talent and tricks of the very experienced players of NYAC made a unique game, leaving everyone guessing as to who would win. In a close game, Keio University earned their first ever Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational championship. Presumably, it was Keio University's physicial fitness, discipline, lack of all-nighters, or a combination of all three that won them the trophy.
