Tournament Summary:

With a highly talented women's division and a men's division featuring most of the world's best lacrosse players, the Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational was destined to be a grand slam home run before the first whistle was blown. Sure enough, as the sun rose above Diamond Head crater on Monday November 4th, thereby marking the end of Sunday's 12th Anniversary fiesta and the 2002 tournament, all participants and fans were in agreement: the 2002 event was a home-run of Barry Bonds magnitude. In the words of many of the world's greatest lacrosse players, the 2002 event undisputedly established the Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational as the premiere lacrosse tournament in the world. One of those players was Casey Powell who after the championship game, stated to a reporter for the Honolulu Advertiser newspaper, "We travel to a lot of beautiful places and play some great competition, but it doesn't get any better than this."

The recipe for success was the same as in years past: a combination of top men's & women's players, a social calendar brimming with energy, a taste of Hawaiian culture in the form of the La-Crossover Outrigger Canoe Regatta, and an idyllic setting (games were played on the warm, green fields of Kapi'olani Park at the base of Diamond Head crater across the street from a blue & inviting Pacific Ocean:o). What made this year's event particularly sweet was:

1) nearly picture perfect weather that helped instill a strong and pervasive spirit of Aloha amongst the participants and fans, and

2) a truly incredible collection of talent with over 30 Major League Lacrosse players, including most of the MLL's stars, such as Ryan Powell, Casey Powell, Jesse Hubbard, John Grant, Jr., and Christian Cook.

In fact, the event was in many ways akin to the NFL Pro Bowl: a gathering in paradise of the best players in the world with the players as interested in showcasing their competitive talents as they were in enjoying the enchanting scenery and culture that is Hawai'i. Any way you slice it, the 2002 tournament will forever be remembered as a Very, Very Special Lacrosse Celebration !
