2002 Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational

Social Summary:

As usual, a lot of the entertainment at the 2002 event came off the field. The festivities began Thursday, October 31st with Bacchanal o Hawai'i a raucous Halloween celebration which proved to be one of the greatest parties to ever grace the shores of Honolulu. Nearly 1,000 people put on a new face and united with the nights four live performance groups and four DJ's transforming the W Honolulu into a crazed, multi-headed entity that Roared deep into the night ! The fuel for that roar came in the form of tremendous percussion. The night began with a conga driven Cuban Santeria performance and ended with a boisterous Brazilian batu cada band that seemed to lift the crowd out of Honolulu and deposit them in the center of Rio during Carnaval. As the lights came up so did the Brazilian chants, and they carried the crowd out of the W and into the starlight streets beneath Diamond Head. Overall, it was an nearly ideal start to the 2002 Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational.

Friday night featured the tournament's 'Welcome Reception' at Kapono's, a wonderful outdoor venue which was filled with the Hawaiian music of Henry Kapono. The reception offered participants plenty of space, ice cold Michelob beers, tasty Smirnoff Twist drinks and ono (delicious) Hawaiian grinds (food). All of that added up to a high-spirited night that allowed folks to rekindle friendships and share stories about the many good times that had come to pass since the 2001 event. So many of the tournament's participants return year after year, and the 'Welcome Reception' provided them with a great chance to talk story and immerse themselves in the Aloha of Hawai'i.

On Saturday night, a new venue was introduced to the tournament. Star 101.9 FM and the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club presented 'Til We All Fall Down' at the Hawai'i Maritime Center adjacent to the historic "Falls of Clyde" schooner. The festivities were centered in a beautiful courtyard on the edge of Honolulu Harbor. The night pumped to the roots reggae sounds of Red Degree and rhythmic stylins of DJ Taharba. With all of this, plus $2.00 Michelob drafts and $3 Smirnoff, Crown Royal and Jose Cuervo drinks, everyone smiled big and bright throughout the night.

Sunday evening brought tournament participants and fans back to Compadres, the Home of the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club. Compadres, one of the club's original sponsors, proved once again to be a wonderful venue for the tournament's wrap-up celebration. Bud Cerio, Jan Jeffries and the Now sent smokin' blues and rock rhythms through the crowd which responded by jumping and jiving on the crowded dance floor. For the second year in a row, Lorne Smith (Marin standout) spiced up the performance with some tasty guitar licks, and Blair Allison (Barbary Coast Captain) turned up the heat with some energized vocals.

The participants and fans at the 2002 Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational again earned an A++ for their social endeavors throughout the weekend. They were faced with a formidable challenge in the form of back-to-back-to-back-to-back celebrations along with a multitude of lacrosse games. As in past year's, the participants and fans met this challenge with open arms, turning the 2002 event into a long weekend filled with Laughter & Cheers !!!
