1st Annual
Women’s Division

While cool fall weather is settling in over much of North America, the lacrosse action will soon be heating up in the middle of the Pacific at the Warburg Pincus Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational. Fifteen men's and women's teams are looking to light Kapi'olani Park on fire when the games get underway on November 4th & 5th. With team rosters that include many of the world's top players, such as Tom Ryan, John Hess and Matt Shearer, the teams will likely be successful in their quest to set the nets ablaze. But, don't tell that to top goalies Brian Carcaterra and Erik Miller who certainly have plans to provide a major cooling effect. While only time will tell who shall win the battles between all of the offensive and defensive powerhouses, one thing is certain. The action will be Very Intense.

As usual though, lacrosse is only part of the story at the Hawai'i tournament. Sharing Aloha with tournament participants and fans is just as important as the lacrosse competition. This year, the 'Warmth of the Islands' should eminate from the event in particularily strong fashion as the Year 2000 Warburg Pincus Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational marks the 10th consecutive year that the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club has hosted the event. In fact, even though the 12 visiting teams have expressed great excitement over their upcoming island vacations, the group that is most excited about this year's event is the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club. The club has a large contingent of long time friends descending into the islands to toast the many fine tournaments of past. In addition, the club has a host of special events planned to make this silver anniversary event extremely memorable. Why exactly is the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club knawing at the bit in anticipation of the big tournament weekend?

For starters, a women's division with a strong international flavor has been added to the tournament. Five teams from Australia, Japan, Hawai'i, Seattle and Canada will be squaring off in hopes of becoming the first ever Hawai'i Women's Champion. All teams have players who have represented their countries in international world cup play, and it is virtually impossible to pick a favorite. However, while the women's championship is very much up for grabs, one thing is certain, the women's division will add a ton of positive energy to the tournament. In fact, the division already has by spawning the birth of the Hawai'i women's team. With the tournament as their carrot, women's players living in Hawai'i have banded together and formed a team that will be competitive this year and even more so in years to come.

Equally as exciting as the inaugural women's division is this year's men's division. This group consists of more teams than ever before, specifically ten teams from Japan, Hawai'i, Canada, the western U.S. and the east coast. Unlike the women's division, the men's side has two clear favorites who will in all likelihood meet in an intense championship game. Two-time defending champ Marin has again amassed an extremely talented team with John Hess, Todd Eichelberger & Lorne Smith providing choke firepower and Brian Carcaterra keeping things tough on the other end.
Don't hand them the trophy just yet though. Matt Cone has put together a WaLax.com squad that has an equally large number of big guns, including Tom Ryan & Matt Shearer at attack and Erik Miller & Brian Reese on the defensive end. If all of the talent from these squads does indeed meet in the final, it will undoubtedly be a game to remember.

Another interesting story in the men's division is the entry into the tournament by the Year 2000 Japanese Club Champions, Valentia Lacrosse Club. This team includes a number of players from the 1998 Japanese World Team, a squad that came just a few goals short of making it into the semi-finals of the 1998 World Games. It is very unlikely that Valentia will be able to knock off Marin, but Valentia will certainly make an impact in the tournament.

Last but not least on the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club's "Most Anticipated" list is the 10th Anniversary social calendar. It is safe to say that with 10 years of hosting under its belt, the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club has this area wired. Additions to the calendar this year are a full fledged gig on Saturday night featuring the super fresh funk sounds of Plush Nugget and a 10th Anniversary Gala winding things up on Sunday Night. Tournament sponsor, Kona Brewing Company will be keeping everyone fully refreshed at all of the social events with great deals on their three premium beers.

The Don Gladstone Award was established in 1992 in memory of Don Gladstone and between 1992 & 1999, was given to the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Starting this year, the award will be presented to an individual associated with the tournament who has given a great deal to lacrosse. In the inaugural 1991 Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational, Don played defense with the Haole Lacrosse Club from British Columbia, Canada. He was both a stellar field and box lacrosse performer. He played on the Richmond Outlaws Junior A box lacrosse team at age 24 and twice went to the Canadian championships. Don died suddenly in the summer of 1992 and will be sadly missed by all who knew him and by the game of lacrosse. In hosting a tournament, one meets a multitude of people who volunteer a tremendous amount of their time to lacrosse. Beginning this year, the Don Gladstone Award will be presented to someone who has selflessly given their time to the promotion and enjoyment of lacrosse. The Hawai'i Lacrosse Club is very proud to have the opportunity to honor the contributions of such individuals with this award.
