Marin Lacrosse Club makes its third trip to the island paradise. This year's team returns with most of last year's cast of characters and a few new comers. The attack will feature the Princeton trio of Jon Hess, Todd Eichelberger, and Taylor Simmers. The midfield will be led by Lorne and Bryan Smith, Tanner Cambell and Charlie Herrick, Jim Keenan and Todd Fryatt. The defense will include Vinnie Dello-Iacono and Dennis Kelly. In the goal will be Brian Carcaterra.

The team will once again extend its stay in the islands for the week following the tournament. Assuming a permanent ban from Kauai, the team is currently in negotiations with an undisclosed location that can accommodate the teams strict 24/7 training regime.

Team Goals: Lax, Re-Lax, and Get Lei'd

WaLax.com & the Crease Monkeys have joined forces for the Year 2000 Warburg Pincus Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational. Player/Coaches Matt Cone & Harry Mazaheri formed the team to bring together lacrosse players from the East & West Coasts, as well as the professional and club leagues, to enjoy the spectacular environs of Hawaii, and to play and promote the sport they so enjoy. For many of the players, this will be the first time they have had the opportunity to play together. All are looking forward to meeting players from other areas of the country & overseas, and especially to making new friends!

Valentia Lacrosse Club

Valentia Lacrosse Club makes their first trip to the Warburg Pincus Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational. Valentia won the Year 2000 Japanese Club Championship and is bringing a competitive group to the islands. Coach Tetsuo Fukasawa will be looking for great things from attackmen Shinya Maruyama & Tetsuhiro Muranatsu, midfielder Hidenori Yokoo, and defenseman Hidenori Yamanaka. All of these players were members of the 1998 Japanese World Team, a team which won all of its first round matches and came just a few goals short of receiving a berth into the semifinals when they lost a very tight game against the Iroquois team. Valentia is very excited about the opportunity to play against many of the world's top players, and is also eager to share Japanese culture with players from all over the world!

Barbary Coast Hawaii
In the 1880's, there was a notorious area in San Francisco known as the Barbary Coast. Packed tight with bordellos and saloons, the Barbary Coast was a playground for the adventurers who had quested across the continent for golden riches, good booze and beautiful women. In the Barbary Coast, anything could happen, and the meek and timid did not venture there, for the Barbary Coast was well known for being rowdy and dangerous. Now, at the dawn of the new millenium, the Barbary Coast Lacrosse Club strives to ensure that this rowdy and dangerous spirit lives on. Like the gold-fevered 49ers of old San Francisco, the Barbary Coast L.C. quests forth for good booze, good lacrosse and beautiful women. This year's squad has a foundation of BC core players, with a fine complement of lads from the Pacific Northwest and the East Coast. "Keep an eye on em Lad! They could be packin the big guns down below the deck!!"

With players from as far north as Syracuse, NY, as far south as Chapel Hill, NC, and as far west as, well I guess, Baltimore, Laxstore.com is comprised of talent featuring players with college careers at Loyola, Georgetown, Salisbury State, Mary Washington, and Radford. Three standouts on this team include, Mike Day a defenseman from Loyola University, Brian Samson a Defenseman from Georgetown University, and Keith Malfa, an Attackman from Salisbury State University.

The only team in the tournament populated by all East Coast born and bred players, unless you count the Far East kids, we are happy to bring a team from the lacrosse homeland out to the Beautiful Hawaiian Islands.

Hawai'i Lacrosse Club

Ten years of lax tournaments in Hawai'i, a very beautiful thang. Amazingly, a large number of players on this year's team played for our club in the inaugural tournament in 1991. Hawai'i is truly a fountain of youth for all. In fact, our starting attack unit, consisting of Jay 'Big Daddy' Bloom (Cornell), Harry Jackson (Army) and Jeff Kloetzel (Virginia), have started for us in each and every Hawai'i tournament. As you can imagine, these guys can feed each other in their sleep. We will be relying on them to keep finding the magic that helped the Hawai'i Lacrosse Club win the 1994 Western States Championship, 1994 Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational and 1995 Tahoe Invitational.

Our veteran attack will not be without support however. Kenny Wessels (Air Force) is often unbelievable in the cage and has good shot at receiving the award as the top goalie in the tournament. In addition, Brendan Keaney (Duke '99), Raymond Gorman (Hawai'i) and Tom Frost (Hawai'i/Hempstead '96) have strong, young legs and will surely tally a number of goals. However, regardless of the outcome on the field, this year's tourney is sure to be a Blast. Many long time friends will be back in the Land of Aloha for the 10th Anniversary Celebration, and that's just what the tournament will be - a Fine Celebration of all the great times that have come to pass in the past ten year's and the many more fantastic days and nights that are sure to be a part of the next ten years of Hawai'i Lacrosse. Let the Games Begin!!!!

Japan Lacrosse Association - U-20 Western All-Stars

Larger View

The Japanese Western All-Stars come to Hawa'i with less international experience than their Eastern counterparts. However, they are just as enthusiastic about the opportunity to match up against top players from the U.S. mainland, Canada and Hawai'i. Midfielder Yusuke Mizuta, defenseman Tasuku Tsutsui and goalie Naoki Wada are expected to lead the charge and hope to bring Coach Takahiro Asato the taste of victory.

Team GB Lax
Team GB Lax, aka 'The Fun Bunch', is now in its 4th year at the Hawai'i tournament. This is a fairly eclectic bunch of men and women mostly from Vancouver and Victoria, two towns in British Columbia, Canada. Several team members play in the Western Lacrosse Association, the Western Canada pro box lacrosse league and the NLL.

Former members of Team GB Lax Hawai'i include Team Toyota players Mark Goers, Rodney Tapp, Gary Gait and Hawai'i native Kim Gray. Past teams have also had the joy of playing with USA world team players, Jamie Brodsky and Laura Harmon.

In its three previous entries in the Hawai'i tournament, Team GB Lax has won the championship once, finished second another time and took fourth place last year. This could be another winning year for 'The Fun Bunch', unless of course that interferes with the primary purpose of the trip which is to have as good a time as possible…..The Fun Bunch and its entourage are, one might say, a drinking team with a Lacrosse problem.

HO'OHULE

Larger View
While many of the tournament's other teams bring history and tradition to the event, Ho'ohule brings youthful enthusiasm and the element of surprise. The Year 2000 Warburg Pincus Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational is the very first tournament in which Ho'ohule has competed. Who are the men who make up this bunch? Ah hah, that information will not be disclosed. The only way to learn about the talent on Ho'ohule's team is to line up against them on the field. Only two pieces of information are being divulged: 1) Steve Webber has the best 'mug' move (pictured at right) in the world and 2) Ho'ohule means 'to blank the opponent' or 'shut them out.'

Japan Lacrosse Association - U-20 Eastern All-Stars

Larger View

For the past five years, Japan has brought U-20 all-star teams to the tournament. Their teams are always fast, tenacious and very focused. Last year, the Eastern All-Stars came up with an inspirational overtime victory over the Catonsville Redshirts (a team that came within two goals of making the final). Coach Tatsuya Kinoshita will be relying on the leadership of midfielder Mikio Yamaguchi and defenseman Motoki Hirata who both played for Japan in the U-19 World Games. The Eastern All-Stars are anxious to build on their victory over Catonsville and to garner invaluable experience against many of the world's best.
